With Halloween just 2 days away I had to post these. I saw these little ghosts on http://www.parenting.com/article/ghost-cakes and had to make them. It is very simple. Make your favorite cupcakes (small works best) and cut out a circle of roll out icing also called fondant. This should be big enough so the "fabric" reaches the bottom of the cupcake. Moisten the cupcake a little so the icing will stick and drape the icing over the cupcake. Use your fingers to lift the bottom of the icing to create the billowing of the sheet. Roll out little balls of the icing and roll it into a tear shape by putting pressure on one side. Flatten to create the white of the eyes. Take some black icing and make the pupils. That's it! The kids ended up eating the cupcakes / muffins so I didn't feel too bad because in the end roll out icing is still mainly sugar.
The next idea came from http://www.food.com/halloween/home/package?oc=headerfav. The first picture is my silent mummy while the second one looks like he is chatting away.
These mummies are made by using your favorite muffin or cupcake recipe. I used my gluten free Zucchini Chocolate muffin here. Pipe a circle of frosting where the eyes are going to be. M&M's are used for the eyes with a dollop of black icing for the pupils. The wrapping is made with a number 47 piping tip with the edged side down. Fill a piping bag with frosting, either home made or store bought. Pipe ribbons from one end to the other, criss - cross. Leave an opening where the mouth is supposed to be unless you prefer your mummies silent. Smooth the sides with either a palette knife or your finger.
Halloween is about treats. I wouldn't serve any of these unless it's a special occasion, but Halloween without mummies or ghosts is like summer without sun.
Happy Halloween, enjoy the Trick or Treating but in moderation!
